Sakamoto’s greatest weakness, especially in his self-produced solo work, is that when nothing sticks, he still ceaselessly throws ideas against the proverbial wall. While its minimalist synth experiments proved influential for later techno, B-2 Unit’s monotonous pieces test listeners’ patience. Released in September 1980, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s second solo LP B-2 Unit proves that art school training doesn’t equal constant brilliance. Mastered by: Heba Kadry (2019 digital remaster) Produced by: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yoshitaka GotoĮngineered by: Dennis Bovell, Steve Nye, Steve Churchyard, and Mitsuo Koike, et al Even if you find the inserts obnoxious, though, it’s still a time capsule as to how big Yellow Magic Orchestra was back then (not even the Beatles had such excessive record packaging!).Īlfa/Great Tracks/Sony Japan 96/24 stream (2019 digital remaster) As if Takahashi’s image wasn’t already plastered everywhere, there’s a sticker sheet featuring replacement disc label stickers featuring-you guessed it-more pictures of him. The tip-on jacket’s artwork is creative, and the four-page insert with lyrics and more photos is acceptable, but no one reading this needs the utterly massive portrait poster (corner tears on mine evidence it was long ago stapled to someone’s wall). The original Seven Seas/King pressing on quiet blue vinyl is bright and compressed but still engaging, though the packaging obsesses over Yukihiro Takahashi, pop idol and human specimen. Although it’s worth a listen (and for completists like myself, a purchase), Murdered By The Music is Takahashi forcing himself into a style that he’s not well-suited for, with occasionally exciting but generally tedious results. Among the highlights here are the neon synth-boogie opener “School Of Thought,” an excellent cover of Holland/Dozier/Holland’s “Stop! In The Name Of Love,” the George Harrison-meets-Kraftwerk stylings of “Mirrormanic,” and the guitar-driven finale, “The Core Of Eden.” Unfortunately, much of Murdered By The Music flops: the title track and “Kid-Nap, The Dreamer” feel like mediocre Clash imitations, the instrumentals “I-Kasu!” and “Bijin-Kyoshi At The Swimming School” add nothing, and “Radioactivist” musically sounds like Sparks without the theatricality. Musically, it’s a new wave record with ska and R&B influences, similar to X∞Multiplies’ real songs. Mixed by: Seiichi Chiba at CBS/Sony Roppongi StudioĪmidst YMO mania’s first wave in 1980, drummer/vocalist/keyboardist Yukihiro Takahashi released Murdered By The Music, which features Hosono (playing bass on side 2), Sakamoto (who programmed all synths here), Kenji Omura (a guitarist and frequent YMO collaborator), Makoto Kubota, Sandii, and others (Chris Mosdell wrote the English lyrics). For brevity’s sake, we’ll exclude the artists’ production work for other acts, focusing only on Takahashi, Hosono, Sakamoto, and Hideki Matsutake-led projects (apologies to fans of Kenji Omura’s Spring Is Nearly Here). Continuing our multi-part exploration of Japanese synthpop group Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), this week we’ll analyze Yukihiro Takahashi, Haruomi Hosono, and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s solo LPs and side projects from 1980-1982. The brutal bear trap that clamps its jaws around anyone unfortunate enough to walk over it has to be a contender, but. It’s pretty pricey so you may want to wait for a sale… but there’s a lot of enjoyment to be had here and the credit for using certain methods to get through obstacles will give completionists a reason to go back and replay levels. Desperados 3 has no dearth of handy tools, so its hard to pick a favourite. If you like stealth action games, western settings and a bit of thought about how to get through levels then this should be right up your dusty alley. Any gunslinging has to be done carefully and with a strong notion of exit strategy (or at least where the closest effective hiding spot is). The important thing for anyone new to the series to remember though is that this is at it’s core, a stealth game. The vistas on offer at times reminded me of the sort of dioramas I’d see at model train exhibitions as a child, the attention to detail is quite impressive. Visually it’s familiar territory to anyone who played the original games but with a pretty modern overhaul. Stealth is key but the way you remain stealthy is varied, from using the landscape against your enemies to engaging in some wildlife help or simply using some voodoo to remove enemies more efficiently. Sure you can try and go in guns blazing, but chances are that will only take you so far before your body suffers a severe case of lead poisoning from all the shots impacting your body. These factors are what make Desperados III an interesting game to play as you aren’t limited to one way to get through the world. But it’s not just the story that provides variety it’s the landscapes and your characters set of skills. Variety is one of the strong points of the game and so as much as the story of how John Cooper came to be the man he is… there are plenty of other story elements that will be entwined as you progress. This is a smart move as it both fleshes out a character that long time fans are familiar with and it also helps bring any new potential fan into the game world and gives them a reason to root for this rag tag bunch of characters. The main character is John Cooper and though he has been (one of) the main character for the previous games, Desperados III provides him with an origin story. The basic gist of the game is you are a group of individuals with their own motivations and goals that happen to have those intentions intersect enough to work together for some time. I’m not sure whether that was any gameplay changes over the years or just I’m at a different point in my gaming and feel more attune to it… either way, it’s a fun game. But I am happy to say that this time around I was quite drawn into the whole experience. I have to admit than when it was first released I was a bit luke warm to Desperados (and to some extent Commandos). Not long after the success of Commandos, Desperados was released using the same general gameplay mechanic and look and suddenly fans of Westerns had a new way to enjoy their favourite genre. It was a new take on a fairly well established genre and provided a fresh way to play through a familiar trope. Many many years ago there was a game called Commandos that created some rumbles in the gaming world. The picture looks like a ceramic or Corningware loaf pan, but I could be very wrong. When a mobile device is disconnected or powered down, AutoRouter automatically closes the loop with the remaining devices, discovering and switching links to establish redundancy, without any user action. The Optocore AutoRouter automatically discovers devices and adds them to the Optocore loop. “We also included the Optocore AutoRouter on the network, because it takes the consoles’ inherent flexibility and expands it,” he says. Further, the Optocore network allows both desks to integrate seamlessly. “All of those were big factors in their decision-making, and the Quantum338 won on every count.”Įddleman adds that the SD12’s small footprint, which nicely allowed it to fit next to the church’s Pro Tools system, as well as its high input capability made the console the natural choice for DBC’s broadcast needs. “We both immediately knew that the new desk was what they needed, in terms of channel counts, in terms of features, and in terms of cost,” says Eddleman. This is DBC’s second generation in the digital mixing arena, and they had become accustomed to the streamlined operational aspects and high I/O counts that digital consoles can offer.
